~1967, The Beatles finished recording ‘Blue Jay Way’, ‘Flying’ and ‘Magical Mystery Tour.’ The Beatles have only six songs, not enough for an album so decided to issue a double-EP. Capitol Records didn’t think the double-EP format would be acceptable for the US market, so they decide to put out an album instead. The six “Magical Mystery Tour” songs with five of the six songs from The Beatles’ 1967 singles went on side two.

Tisdale_keith     …..BREAKING IN SMOOTH NEWS…..
~For his new album, ‘American Ride’, country music singer Toby Keith wrote a song for his dear friend, the late smooth jazz bassist Wayman Tisdale. The video of that song, “Cryin’ For Me (Wayman’s Song),” made its debut on Country Music Television’s website yesterday, and also appeared on the TV channel beginning November 3rd. It features a guest appearance by smooth jazz saxophonist Dave Koz.
Tisdale and Keith, both Oklahomans, had been friends for a long time. On Tisdale’s final album, last year’s Rebound, the bassist recruited Keith to sing on a cover of Barry White’s “Never, Never Gonna Give Ya Up.” At Tisdale’s public memorial service in May, Keith says he wanted to perform “Cryin’ For Me (Wayman’s Song),” but admitted he was too emotional about the loss of his friend to complete the tune. Instead, he dedicated to Tisdale an acoustic version of Willie Nelson’s ‘Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground.’” (www.smoothjazznetwork.com)

“Art Sherrod Jr’s sophomore release, SEASONS, is a standout! This CD is filled with a dozen strong tracks of tasteful, mellow sax work and a host of major guest players. Names like U-Nam, Will Downing, Gerald Albright (actually playing bass on “Just Chillin’”), Chuck Loeb, and Marcus Johnson all contribute to a collection of tunes that just feels good to my ear. After the fantastic success of ALL 4 LOVE this one is destined to be the breakout album for this native Texan who now makes his home in the Baltimore/D.C. area. The songs are solid, the performances electric, the production values World-class. No question in my mind that Art Sherrod Jr will soon be sharing the upper reaches of the charts with some of his inspirations, like Gerald Albright, Kirk Whalum and Kim Waters. At the risk of sounding trite, Art Sherrod Jr’s SEASONS is a no-brainer. Get it!” ~SCOTT O’BRIEN

Harp says the CD is more of a traditional jazz album that he’s done before, which is why he titled the CD First Love. “Over the last year and a half,” he says, “the live playing I have done has been interlaced with some mainstream jazz gigs … in Europe and Southeast Asia, giving me the opoortunity to play with some incredible musicians in a variety of venues. All of which led me, inexorably, to this recording. With First Love I was given the opportunity to explore some of the elements of jazz that made me crave to learn more about this wonderful music.”
First Love is produced by George Duke and features original songs such as “Texas Groove,” “Soul Fries” and “Blossom.” Harp also covers George and Ira Gershwin’s “Our Love Is Here to Stay” and John Coltrane’s “Central Park West.”
Harp is currently on an extended overseas tour that continues through the end of the year, but will schedule shows in the U.S. for 2010.”

He was not aware a park visitor had taken a photo of three feral swine the day before. “Where they came from, how long we’ve had them here, or are they just passing through the area, who really knows?” Mr. Whitcomb said. A survey of people around the perimeter of the 65,000-acre state park did not turn up any people who keep swine, he said. The state Department of Environmental Conservation “is quite concerned,” he added. “It’s almost an invasive species. We certainly don’t want them to take up residence in the park. They are a real problem in some Southern states.”

A Moment for Us?

*Allman Brothers Band Live at the Fillmore -had been familiar with it, but once I saw them at Watkins Glen, just couldn’t get enough of it for the next few years…and to this day, I think it’s their best lp.
*Chicago Transit Authority-Chicago’s first lp was filled with such diversity and power (strong horns, lots of wild guitar, great melodies and vocals)
*Frank Sinatra Live at the Sands-I always give my mom credit for an early interest in music. She had stacks of “records”, and there were always a few stacked on that spindle thing on her stereo in the living room. This particular Sinatra lp is so slick, so live, so entertaining…like you’re in “his room” on the Strip. And with Quincy Jones and Count Basie…pure swingin’ entertainment…yes, even for a kid not yet in high school. It’s on my Wish List of Tune-age to purchase someday.

Well thanks for coming by today. Make it a Smooth ‘n’ Jazzy start of the week and month, would ya?

Hewitt, who has been a mainstay in the production room for artists like Earth, Wind and Fire, Warrant and Donny Osmond, and has written for movies and for Oprah Winfrey’s daytime talk show.
“I wanted to bring back the energy to Retroactive that I used to feel and hear when I would listen to the Jazz Crusaders, Return to Forever, Weather Report and Ramsey Lewis,” said Hewitt, who in 2006 released a CD titled Metropolis and in 2004 offered Noche de Passion. Retroactive has guest appearances by trumpeter Greg Adams and guitarists Paul Jackson Jr. and Steve Oliver, among others.
The 10-track CD has covers of “Shaft” and “Hot Fun in the Summertime,” in addition to original tunes such as “All For You,” “Nassau Blue” and “Saturday Afternoon.”

~Smooth jazz saxophonist Euge Groove just released his sixth solo CD, Sunday Morning. He calls it an expansion of his last CD, Born 2 Groove, which features the current Smooth Jazz Top 20 hit “Slow Jam.”
The 10-song CD has all original songs, including the title track and “Geteugegroovelp Ready,” “As You Like It,” “Say My Name,” “Tenderly” and “The Gospel Truth,” among others. Musicians include guitarists Paul Brown – who also mixed the CD – and Jubu Smith, pianists Tracy Carter and Joel Campbell, bassists Cornelius Mims, Alex Al and Roberto Vally, drummer Oscar Seaton and percussionist Lenny Castro. Philippe Saisse arranges strings on three tracks, while Michael Egizi plays the Hammong B3 organ on the title track and Dax Reynosa is featured on lead vocals on “Yes.”
Groove will be performing November 5 to November 8 in Seattle. On November 18, he will be one of several smooth jazz artists on the five-day Jammin’ in Jamaica event assembled by fellow saxophonist Warren Hill.”

“First of all, I’m alive,” says Perry, 57. “I’m in the hospital, not the morgue. Thank God. I don’t want to be here, and I am really not looking forward to more tests. But I’m alive. I fainted on stage in the middle of a song – the last one, thankfully. It happened so fast. … Your prayers are working. I can eat, talk on the phone, do updates. It’s just all these tubes, man! I’ll be okay, but keep the prayers coming.”
Perry says he is doing fine and will be back on the road soon. “My heart is wired like the Energizer Bunny, with a nifty little defibrillator to keep me on beat and keep me on my feet.”
Perry, who lives in Southern California,  this summer joined Norman Brown’s Summer Storm tour, and is scheduled to perform in January on the annual Dave Koz & Friends at Sea cruise. His most recent CD, offered earlier this month, is a duets project with Tony Award-winner Melba Moore, The Gift of Love. Perry has also started planning his next solo project, which he says will be inspired from his love of Brazilian music. That CD would be scheduled for 2010.”

*Favorite Beatles Album: Can’t decide on just one…
-”Help!” has got to have the greatest pop/rock tunes ever!
-”Rubber Soul” and “Revolver” also loaded with memorable and creative songs.
*Steely Dan’s “Aja”…incredible mix of things I’d loved growing up…jazz, r&b/soul, and pop.
*”The Road to You” by Pat Metheny Group. I think the song that got me searching out more from Pat was “Are You Going With Me?”. But when I heard this ‘live’ album from his group…just blew me away!
I’ll bring some more to the table here, but feel free to share a few of  yours.

~“Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Rod Stewart was on the Today show  October 26, and performed songs from his new CD, Soulbook. The CD is being released today.
Soulbook is a tribute to a glorious period in pop history, and a logical extension of Stewart’s Grammy-Award winning Great American Songbook albums, which have sold more than 19 million copies, making them the biggest selling ongoing series of new music recordings ever. The new CD is a collection of classic ‘60s- and ‘70s-era soul favorites, featuring his renditions of such immortal songs as “Love Train,” “Just My Imagination” and “Wonderful World.” Smokey Robinson is featured on Robinson’s own “Tracks of My Tears,” while Stewart duets with Jennifer Hudson on “Let It Be Me” and Mary J. Blige on “You Make Me Feel Brand New.”
Also included is Stevie Wonder’s “My Cherie Amour,” which includes a harmonica solo by Wonder himself. Guitarist Ray Parker Jr. is featured on the song, which is the Feedback track this coming weekend on the Smooth Jazz Top 20 hosted by Allen Kepler.
In addition to Parker, other musicians on Soulbook include guitarist Paul Jackson Jr., who has a Smooth Jazz Top 20 hit with “Easy Like Sunday Morning,” Fourplay bassist Nathan East, saxophonist Tom Scott, drummer Ricky Lawson, and percussionist Lenny Castro.
Stewart says Soulbook is the CD that he’s waited his whole life to record. “These are the songs that I’ve danced to, made love to, cried to and yes, even fell on the floor to as a young man in the infancy of my career,” Stewart says. “These songs and singers were the oxygen that fueled my passion to sing.”
In addition to his performance on the Today show, Stewart will be featured October 27 on The View and October 29 on Jimmy Kimmel Live.”

~”During much of 2008 and early 2009, smooth jazz saxophonist Euge Groove joined Tina Turner on her 50th anniversary worldwide Tina: Live in Concert Tour in one of the top-grossing tours in recent years, according to Billboard magazine. Today, October 20, you can catch the show as a DVD/CD package from the show’s stop in Holland is being released. In Tina Live, Turner, along with Groove on sax, performed to more than 70,000 people at the show. It’s also available on just DVD or as a CD only.
Directed by David Mallet, the footage is filmed in HD and mixed in 5.1 surround sound. At over two hours long it features many of her best-known songs including, “What’s Love Go to Do With It,” “The Best,”tinalive “Private Dancer,” “Proud Mary” and “Better Be Good to Me.”
The tour was a reunion for Groove and Turner, as he also performed in Turner’s band during a tour in 2000. He recalls meeting Turner late in 1999 before that tour. “She just starts going into me. I want you to do this and this and this, and jump up and down and dance and I’m like … Oh my gosh, what have I gotten myself into? But that’s her personality. She knows what she wants, and she’s going to let you know what she wants, and there’s only one way to do it – the way that she wants. But here’s the other side of that that’s great. She was always right. People would think that she was not right or try to tell her to do something else, and she would stick to her guns and ultimately in the end she was right every time.”
Groove currently has a Smooth Jazz Top 20 hit with “Slow Jam,” and releases a new CD called Sunday Morning on October 27.”
